Tristan enjoying McDonald's
Cohen with Keegan behind him
Keegan, the cool dude with a fuzzy chin
We found a vending machine that prints your name in hieroglyphics
Each of the kids wanted their name printed in hieroglyphics. Kinda cool, actually
This is the famous ape, Bushman
The littler ones were fascinated by this sarcophagus
A gold-faced mummy
Another mummy with big ears
Some sort of inscribed tablet that was part of burial remains
Maybe this mummy mask was for a young man or woman?
Figures that were placed in burial chambers
The kids were really interested in all of the Egyptian artifacts
Keegan and Tristan were looking closely at something
An exhibit that showed what the Nile was like
A mummified hawk
A mummified cat
A figurine in the shape of a baboon
Brinley and Tristan playing around
These utensils were what Egyptian men used to shave
Another photo of the shaving tools
A carved relief of some sort
Closer up photo of a carved relief
Still closer photo of a carved relief
A scroll containing writings of a scribe
I think these were examples of mirrors
Egyptian necklaces especially caught the attention of Michele and Brinley
Beautiful pottery
The man-eating lion of Mfuwe, apparently the largest such lion ever captured or shot. It killed six people before being killed itself, carefully preserved, and then donated to the museum in 1999
Part of the main exhibit hall facing to the south toward the gift shop
A view of the main exhibit hall showing the 2nd floor gallery
One of the statues above the entrance
The beautiful ceiling of the main exhibit hall
Arched doorway above the main entrance
A beautiful old bell, used in a temple
Entrance to an exhibit about the Pacific islands
A mockup of a lavaflow in Hawaii
A Hawaiian village
Cohen and Brinley thought the lava felt funny
Michele and Brinley looking at an exhibit showing how the Hawaiian islands were formed. Michele is pointing out Kauaii, where we stayed on our honeymoon
Would that this beautiful scene were real!
I decided on a whim to take a self portrait and made a grimace while doing so
Michele took this one of me
Keegan trying to look interested
A typical style of boat in the Pacific
This photo shows the outrigger commonly used by Pacific islanders
Cohen and Tristan playing with an exhibit that demonstrates the usefulness of an outrigger in keeping boats stable at sea
A real lab where real people were working on pieces in the Field Museum's permanent collections
Some small carved figures
Cohen and Brinley looking in some of the exhibit drawers
This photo shows what a meeting structure might look like on a typical Pacific island
Tristan by the fence
All three had to get in the act
Cohen, Brinley and Tristan
This is a spider that spun silk thread. The big one is the female, the teeny one is the male
Another photo of the spiders. I sure wouldn't want the female spider to be found crawling on me!
Brinley took this photo
Cohen took this photo
A slit drum
There were lots of different masks
Some more carved figures
Another carved slit drum
I like the symmetry of this particular mask (or is it a shield? I forget)
Closeup of the shield
Another photo of this shield
A cute pose for Brinley
Brinley thinks she is so funny
I thought at first that these were some sort of crab claws or something. But Michele corrected me, saying they are beaks of hornbills! (Next time, just read the inscription, Steve!)
Interesting carved figure
Keegan looking closely at part of the exhibit telling the story of the help Pacific islanders gave to the Allies in World War II
Some interesting headdresses
Where did they get the idea for this mask from?
Perhaps the most elaborate and a little bit scary looking mask
I imagine some little guy running around wearing this
Michele liked this mask best
The famous T. Rex, named Sue
Closeup of Sue's head
Some stuffed elephants in the main exhibit hall
Totem poles in the main exhibit hall
Another view of Sue, the famous T. Rex
Looking down the exhibit hall
Another view of the exhibit hall looking toward the main entrance to the south
A pteradactyl?
More pteradactyl
Closeup of the pteradactyl's head
Another shot of the pteradactyl
Beautiful butterflies
Another view of the butterflies. I was trying a different angle to avoid the flash reflecting on the glass
Some sort of prehistoric monster. Looks to me like a very big precursor to the modern day snapping turtle
More prehistoric creatures
This one looks a bit like an early croc
Another view; again, I was trying to avoid having the flash reflected in the photo but didn't succeed
A colorful scene of dinosaurs fighting
I forget what kind of dinosaurs these were, but I think they were the vicious kind made famous in the Jurassic Park movies
A stegosaurus I think
The foot of a very large dinosaur
Head of a stegosaurus
A nice view of the downtown skyline of Chicago
A view of Adler Planetarium. We have never been there
The kids were trying to all fit inside the footprint of a dinosaur
Another photo of the kids inside the dinosaur's footprint
A view of Shedd Aquarium from within the Field Museum
A bigger view of the Shedd
A T. Rex
I can't remember the name of this one
I should know this one but can't remember its name
Another view of the T. Rex
A sauropod head, reconstructed
A fossilized fish
A mammoth skeleton plus that of some sort of large, ancient reindeer
A beautiful light display even if it is there to glorify Darwinism
The portico of the Field Museum Store
This external shot of the Field Museum was taken by Tristan
