Steve,

Unfortunately, the only way you'll be able to try the double-size is to come out to California and attend the right farmer's market in the right community: It is literally illegal for the farmer to attempt to sell these as commercial produce because they're misshapen. These are being sold directly by the farmer.

It makes sense that Harry & David would have been shipping kiwifruit (again, probably from New Zealand) back then: A very tasty specialty fruit that they could demand a high price for.

Walt, I think you may be right about the source of the kiwi fruit in the 70s. I think it came from Harry & David. You mention the gold kiwifruit. Funny enough, I didn't even know these existed until just the other day when I saw them at a local grocery store. I'm going to try them at the earliest opportunity (I was in a hurry in that visit to the store and didn't have time to make up my mind about buying some). I'd love to be able to try the double-size ones you have.

Steven,

I can't be sure, but there's a good chance those kiwifruit in the 70s came from New Zealand (although they might have been ordered from California or from Harry & David in Oregon). As I recall, most of the kiwifruit we purchased hereabouts came from New Zealand until the last 10-15 years, when California versions became better established. (Seems to me gold kiwifruit may still be exclusive to NZ.)

Locally--and this is VERY local--we've been getting remarkable double-size kiwifruit at the local farmer's market. These ones can't be marketed commercially; the way they're double-sized (sort of like a heart with two chambers) means they don't meet state marketing standards. But they're fabulous...and won't be back until November, sigh.

You know, your kids just might see the occasional vinyl LP. The LP has staged a resurgence of sorts...

Hi, Steven---That microwave still exists, as it is used in the mtg. rm. Think of all the changes I've seen--interstate highways, auto gears, instead of stick shift, airplanes for common travel, central airconditioning, medications and treatment for diabetes, replacement joints, email, etc. etc. etc.

Lots of love,

Mother
